Salvador Late or Early Analysis
Salvador Late or Early, a short story by Sandra Cisneros, tells us about a young boy named Salvador who lives an underprivileged
life. He has no friends and not even his teachers know who he is. He lives in a run-down home where he takes care of his
brothers Cecilio and Arturio, "shakes the sleepy brothers awake, ties their shoes, combs their hair with water, feeds them milk
and cornflakes from a tin cup in the dim dark of the morning.”(Cisneros, 1) Salvador has the responsibility of doing the things his
mother can’t because she is taking care of the baby. Cisneros writes that Salvador is not capable of being happy because he has
no room in his life for it, “Inside that body too small to contain the hundred balloons of happiness, the single guitar of grief,"
(Cisneros, 1) Salvador is a skinny boy with many scars and knows a history of hurt because of abuse either at school or from his
father. The setting of an urban city and the theme of Salvador's neglect and responsibility are influenced by Cisneros' childhood.
While Cisneros was growing up she was constantly moving and because of this her family was poor and lived in a run-down
house as well as Salvador. Many Mexican American families are poor and live underprivileged lives, but Salvador's case is more
on the extreme side because of no one knowing him and him not having any friends. Salvador Late or Early is a short story
written by Sandra Cisneros, and it is about a young Mexican-American boy who lives a frugal life and his life is very similar to
Sandra Cisneros.
